Untraceable
2008-Thriller/Mystery
I must have been in a phase a few months back on watching Thrillers and Mysteries due to most of my summer movie viewings. This one was another attempt to find the next 'Silence of the Lambs' 'Seven' or 'Perfect Blue' instead i ended up with 'Eagle Eye' and 'Firewall'.
The same ideas apply. On one side you have a government agency that is too far off to science fiction with billions of dollars worth of technology and techniques to isolate a suburban kid illegally downloading movies online and on the other side, a technological mastermind armed only with a basement full of Fancy looking hardware able to televised his killings online.
The measures from realism to insanely Sci-Fi is constantly crossed without a blink of an eye makes this film feel too much like a preachy sermon about "Don't Download illegally cuz our government is watching you" unless you are that one guy that they somehow cant monitor due to his devious skills as a government trained hacker.
All-in-All:
So far no such luck in the Thriller genre this year. This film falls flat on its face as a dumb attempt for advertising how well the government keeps track online of possible illegal activities. It may work for people that still type with their index fingers and barley know what an e-mail is but to most people its just too far off as unrealistic for a movie that's supposed to take place at current day.

Eagle Eye
2008-Thriller
I wasn't all that exited to watch this movie to be completely honest. This was the very same film that took "The Dark Knight" off of IMAX after all. With all the Spielberg buzz and Shia LaBeouf hype it was slated as the must see thriller of the summer.
So what happens with a film with all the buzz and endorsements the best of what Hollywood has to offer? How about a mediocre story, predictable plots, and cookie cutter characters? This film takes everything about fear of technology films like 'Space Odyssey' , 'Stealth' and 'Maccross Plus' (Just to name a few) about a sentient computer deciding that humanity is evil and its purpose is to destroy evil. Yea, that's just about it. No surprises there, the only difference is Shia's unique ability of pulling of the 'I don't know whats going on' face that he's known for and his nervous stuttering of words to show the audience how uneasy he is.
All-in-All:
To most 'Thrillers' the audience is expected to bring their brains into the experience and learn whats going on as the film progresses. This is no such film. Is it entertaining? yea, sure. Is it a graphical power house? nope, most of the scenes are covered in darkness and the details are too hard to see. But the main Question that is posed is, was it worth the $10 admission or worth the $19-$35 price for DVD/Blu-Ray? the answer is a "NO" don't waist your time, rent in if you have to but don't waist your time with this unless you want to have another DVD in your collection to collect dust.

Funny Games
1997-Austria
Thriller/Horror
I placed this film on my Netflix list possibly a year ago. I noticed it a few months ago and decided to give it a shot. I didn't really know too much about this film, outside of cruel and horrible acts, and that it was a forgin film.
Synopsis:
Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.
All-in-All:
I loved the way the film properly portrayed a 'Realistic' family trying to deal, and the villains outlandish unreal elements. The pacing can be called ridiculous because of some scenes drag (there was one scene i recall lasting for over 6min. with no movement or dialogue). I understand giving actors time to emote as well as directing realism by 'experiencing' the characters 'beats' but it was too much. The end of the film robs the viewers of a solid ending, instead the viewers are forced to accept the events. The constant breaking of the 4th wall was tactless and at often times offencive to whats going on the film.

Starship Troopers 2
2004-Sci-Fi
Its been years since I've seen 'Starship Troopers'. The original film reminds me of a time when summer blockbuster films were simple, and cool graphics were enough to warrant any bad film to at least a viewing. I had lots of fun with the first film. But now, 7 years later, the sequel finally sees light of day. I came into this film expecting the worst, and it held true to its promise.
Synopsis:
A small group of troopers find themselves taking refuge in an abandoned outpost as they attempt to fight against the encroaching arachnids, not realizing that a much graver danger is actually infiltrating their unit.
All-in-All:
Coming into this film, i knew what to expect. Straight to DVD, instantly I was treated with lower budget and bad CGI of the Aliens/Bugs. The acting was high school at best, but the plot was different. Different in a manner of someone replacing my Starship Trooper DVD with an 'Aliens' like movie. Instead of getting treated with legions and legions of Bugs you are shocked with body snatchers and a closed in facility. Nothing like the original series. Because of this, this film was actually a surprise and viewable even though the story was still predictable and characters 2 dimensional.

Be Kind Rewind
2008-Comedy
I admit i like Jack Black. The man is hilarious in his music, and acting even though he plays the same roll over and over again (like most comedians today, I'm looking at you Will Farrel). This movie had to have been delayed for a while because i could have sworn that I saw the trailer for this February of last year about it coming out for the Christmas season. Too bad too, this film would have been perfect for the holidays.
Synopsis:
Jerry is a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant he suspects of causing his headaches. But he inadvertently causes his brain to become magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of all the movies in his friend's store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with a tenuous grasp on reality, the pair re-create a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop, putting themselves and their townspeople into it. They become the biggest stars in their neighborhood.
All-in-All:
I really enjoyed this film. More than i should have. The 'Sweded' theme and their original takes on the films were down right hilarious. I guess it relates to me in a lot of ways, doing the same things for church and personal fun. The story itself was just an excuse for some what of a trial that the characters had to overtake, and the reasons of the tapes getting erased was just a throw away plot. Now that i think about it, ignore the plot completely and just enjoy the chemistry of the 2 main characters and their antics. O-yea, did I forget to mention that Danny Glubber is in this film too?

Vantage Point
2008-Action/Mystery
I'm a fan of Forest Whitaker. I like that he has an odd presence on and off camera, I just don't know what to make out of him. Because of that I enjoy the films he is in (yep, even Ghost Dog). This was a film brought to the House by none other than our personal Technician Nick.
Synopsis:
President Ashton (William Hurt) is attending a global war on terror summit in Spain. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) are two of the Secret Service agents assigned to protect him. This is the first action that Agent Barnes has been in since he took a bullet for President Ashton six-month earlier. We really dont know if Agent Barnes is up to the challenge of protecting the President. Shortly after President Ashton is escorted to the stage in the plaza by the Secret Service, he is immediately shot twice by a rifle from a window and falls to the floor. The crowd is in shock and chaos breaks out all over, especially, when bombs begin to explode. Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) is an American video-taping the event to show to his children that he was actually there at this historic event. He believes that he has the picture of the man who shot the President. Agent Barnes sees the tape and has a clue to that person. Several different people witness the event, and only through their eyes do we see the truth behind the assassination attempt.
All-in-All:
This film was surprisingly good. Just when the vantage points (perspectives) get tiresome suddenly things go amiss. The action was perfectly executed, and the plot threads are masterfully woven. But my favorite thing about this film is more of the 'behind the scenes' aspect of the shots were taken simultaneously. Each camera troupe following each individual actor doing his/her parts to the climax. This film is a great example of directors and writers thinking outside the box of the genre.

The Tiger Blade
2005-Action
Thailand
In my curiosity of how Thailand is doing in its growth in its Cinematic arts, the people at Netflix (or quite possibly their A.I., which actually part times as a missile silo computer) recommended this film for me. It was a slow month and I decided to act upon the Internet gods request fearing a phallic shaped rocket object would appear with a course to my living room.
Synopsis:
When a highly volatile case confronts the police, a young maverick cop with mystical powers is put on the case. YOSTHANA teams up with the seductive DUANGDAO, and together they must hunt down and capture the brutal and deadly 'FIVE BULLETS BANDIT'. The gang is led by the fearsome, MAHESAK, who like Yosthana is skilled in the art of sorcery and magic. Mahesak can only be defeated with The Tiger Blade, a magical and ancient sword, replete with the powers of nature, and the forces of good. Yosthana must find the Tiger Blade, and bring Mahesak to justice, before the bandits bring total chaos to the city. The stage is set for a gruesome battle between the two nemesis, but only one can survive.
All-in-All:
Now if my synopsis sounds amazing to you, it did to me as well. This was written by a really good salesman with a mastery of the English language, because he did mention some things that would be in the film, but the film itself was a horrible waste of time. I would rather receive several bites from the neighborhood raccoon than to watch this film again. The fight scenes were average at best (the only one in the beginning) and the actual Tiger Blade (mind you what the synopsis claimed to be a mystical sword) was actual the Cops code name, the mystical sword that can kill the villains? only used once, the rest of the time, i guess the director forgot about the weapon because the other villains (the Five Bullets Bandit) died by elbows and beatdowns. Don't watch this, the cover looks good, and its claim that this is the Ong Bak evolution (with strings and wires?) is an all out lie from the sales pitch.

Zorro the Gay Blade
1981-Comedy
I remember watching this film when I was 10 years old. Those were the days when Political Correctness and fun romps with gray gay areas. As a kid, I remember laughing at slapstick comedy and funny plot twists, but never full comprehended the Gay humor or Witty quips.
Synopsis:
Mexico, 1840s. When the new Spanish Governor begins to grind the peasants under his heel, wealthy landowner Don Diego Vega (George Hamilton) follows in his late father's footsteps and becomes Zorro, the masked man in black with a sword who rights wrongs and becomes a folk hero to the people of Mexico. When Vega sprains his ankle and cannot figure out how to continue his campaign against the corrupt Captain Esteban, luck stays with Vega when his long-lost twin brother Ramon (also George Hamilton in a dual role), who was sent off by their father to the British Royal Navy to make a "man" of him, whom is also flamboyantly gay, and now known as Lt. Bunny Wigglesworth, appears for a visit. 'Bunny' agrees to temporarily take his brother's place as Zorro, but wishes to make some changes. Bunny becomes 'the Gay Blade' in which his new suits are lemon, plum, and scarlet colored, and Bunny insists on using a whip. Bunny also becomes the liaison between Don Vega and the liberal American activist/feminist Charlotte (Lauren Hutton) a long-time critic of Captain Esteban's policies, and who has a crush on her masked hero.
All-in-All:
This film is freakin funny. The jokes, the lines and deliveries, hilarious! Man, this would have to be one of my favorite 100 comedies of all time. These were the times of true satire comedies and not the crap we shovel through today. The plot was different, and that the whole 'Gay' thing was key to the film, it wasn't the trick pony that I expected. surprising me with an actual plot and character development. Watch this if you enjoy laughing and not feeling the weight of Political Correctness.

Japan-Akira Kurosawa
I've been a fan of his work since high school. I think his best work to date was 'Ran'. I love his style of directing, and can only imagine how much Kurosawa influenced Japanese Cinema with his East meets West style. Like so many of his films Kurosawa has taken another Shakespeare work and adapted it to the Japanese audience. Nothing new for our era of remakes and copies of old films, but back then it was something that can make or break your career.
Synopsis:
A transposition of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' to medieval Japan. After a great military victory, Lords Washizu and Miki are lost in the dense Cobweb Forest, where they meet a mysterious old woman who predicts great things for Washizu and even greater things for Miki's descendants. Once out of the forest, Washizu and Miki are immediately promoted by the Emperor. Washizu, encouraged by his ambitious wife, plots to make even more of the prophecy come true, even if it means killing the Emperor.
All-in-All:
This film was fun to watch and it was fast paced (as fast pace as a Shakespeare tale gets). I enjoyed the similarities of both cultures, and is a testament of Shakespeare's skill of a writer having a tale that can cross oceans and cultures. This was a treat for me as a fan of both director and writer, but some things were amiss. The acting was 2 dimensional and forced, the music was often times none existent, and the story itself felt shallow (I'll bet to fit the time restraints). But then again I'm just grasping at straws here.

United Kingdom
When I first saw this film as a trailer, i was amazed.
This had everything that a 'Man Movie required.
Action-Explosions-Random Acts of over the top violence-and at least 10min. of no dialogue other than the characters screaming as if giving birth to a spiked ball from their penis hole.
To say that this film was something i was looking forward to view was an understatement.
Another bonus... it was from the same cast/crew/director from another Awesome film titled "Dog Soldiers".
Nothing could go wrong right?
Synopsis:
Scotland is ravished with an unknown flesh eating virus. The only resolution the government/world can think of is creating a barrier around Scotland and let the people inside, infected or not. 20 years have passed and the Virus has reared its ugly head in London. Upon discovery that there were still survivors in Scotland, the government sends its top agents to find a cure, before another barricaded loss occurs.
All-in-All:
This film mixed 3 manly genres. Zombie, Mad Max, and Lord of the Rings.
I know what your thinking, 'This is truly a sight to behold' but to no avail. Each segment was average at best, drawing out the general plot and to make things worse it does a horrible job at making transitions from each... umm..... realm?
from a Zombie like infested horror film comes a Mad Max biker gang complete with shoulder pads and Mohawks, then just over the mountain, the hero's face off against knights, castles, and armored horses, then ends with a political climax of 'The government is hiding the truth'. It frustrates me watching the fight scenes due to them ending too soon, or its too dark to even see the moves. To quote some person i don't really know "This was a Beautiful Mess".

-Chile-
The title says it all, one look at the Cover and it spoke to me.
Reminds me of the days of Mortal Combat, and Fighting Games of the 90's. I've even read somewhere that this was Chile's answerer to 'Ong-Bak' so immediately i needed to watch this film with all my dear loved ones, to share the possible glory or the more logical pain of viewing this film.
Synopsis:
This is a story of a lovable ogre/oaf named Zamir (aka Kiltro) a street fighter in love with the lovely daughter of a tae kwon do master. When her father is threatened, Zamir must learn to control his fighting skills in order to protect them all.
All-in-All:
If you read anything about this film you find that people (mostly of Chilean descent) fish for anything positive about this film like, 'Easy and Fun to watch', right now I'm gonna tell you that 'Easy' means a broken story/plot with lots of holes with no nonsense logic. 'Fun to watch' is like enjoying getting your foot crushed by 'Smart Car' while getting pummeled on the back of the head by a woman named 'Frank'. Keep away from this film. Its Chile's answer to crap and life.

This film was never on the radar up until I saw the cover of the DVD in my local Target. The cover was interesting enough to have me read the preface and since then I knew i should view this film.
Unfortunately Netflix is the kind of system that keeps one waiting a while so that by the time I finally received the film on mail (2months later... yea i have a long list) I came into this film with no hype and no expectation outside of this film going to be weird, but with the mood that i'm in, I'm more currently into gritty detective noir at this point, and this film is totally the opposite.
Synpsis:
A fresh-out-of-the-mental institution father and his emancipated teenage daughter venture together on a quest for an ancient Spanish treasure buried beneath their local Costco in this take on the modern family and the American dream.
All-in-All:
I am sceptical of films trying to be 'Independent' for 'Independent Film' sake. It seems to be a big trend in todays 'Hollywood' movies. Don't get me wrong i'm loving this movement due to its focus on story telling and outside box thinking. This film has great acting with convincing roles even though the source material was completely unbelievable. This is a must see for the people that wants to see a film not too out of the norm but safe.

I first viewed this film back in 1999 and was blown away. It captured the mood and feel of " Leon: The Professional" and yet took advantage of the Animated medium. I had to buy the VHS and for a long time apart of my quintessential of anime.
A few months ago, a co-worker of mine asked for any recommendation and this film immediately popped into mind. The problem was that the co-worker viewed the 'Directors Cut' version which included around 10min. worth of animated porno ruining the film. Be sure to view the 'regular' theatrical release version! you have been warned.
Synopsis:
Sawa is a school girl, an orphan, and a hitman. She's under the control of Akai and Kanie, who give her targets to kill, detailing to her the crimes these men have committed. Some of Akai and Kanie's power over Sawa has to do with her deceased parents and a pair of earrings that are her prized possessions. Akai and Kanie bring Sawa in to assist another orphan, Oburi, with a multiple hit. Oburi and Sawa become friends, and this friendship may give Sawa the strength to break from her controllers, whose crimes against her are as abusive as the crimes ascribed to the men they have her kill.
All-in-All:
The almost 10years have passed and this film is still amazing. The plot, and animation still remains intact. Again, to view this film in its 'Directors Cut' forum was distracting to the plot and would confuse the viewers, going to the point of loosing its amazing gritty tale of the destruction of the innocent age.

This film is more of an exercise of Directing, testing visual effects and style, but simply no focus on storytelling. This film was a headache to view, with its no nonsense plots of Homosexuality, maturity, heaven, space, and inner torment, o yea, place a murder mystery in there somewhere also and there you have it. This was a visual treat but i tended to fight off sleep and picking my nose just to stay focus on this film that 'Pretends' to be deeper that what it truly is, all show and silence but not depth, keeping things vague and open to viewers interpretation so that the writers didn't have to.

Synopsis:
An (unnamed) Guy is a Dublin guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad's Hoover repair shop by day, and singing and playing for money on the Dublin streets by night. An (unnamed) Girl is a Czech who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and takes care of her mom and her daughter by night. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other as the Girl helps the Guy to put together a demo disc that he can take to London in hope of landing a music contract. During the same several day period, the Guy and the Girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs.
All-in-All:
There is charm in this film and it recognizes the 'Not Too Grand' approach by taking a laid back premise and sticks to a more grounded tale of Guy meets Girl. The film has an organic feel, and characters are relatable and seems genuine, its hard to tell if they are acting or just being themselves, directing was basic and the main star on the film is the music. The music is both haunting and meaningful, the soundtrack is a must for fans of the film.

In an age when kids believed in being astronauts, neighbors, and parents, this film was one of the most memorable tales. I remembered wrapped around a warm comforter in the living room with my auntie Janette watching this film being amazed by the believable effects and touching storyline of true love overcoming darkness (this too was a time/age where kids believed in true love).
My how this film aged.
Synopsis:

All-in-All:
Its been so long since my world has collapse in itself. It visions of great epic stories of the sad 'Spider Lady' and the tale of the 'Cyclops' which I remember to this day is shattered by the awful acting. As a child I thought the tale of a Valiant Prince who would stop at nothing to find his lost love was nothing more than a crybaby that would rather jump on a dog pile full of naked men than receive a mouth full of love from a fare maiden. My world went Topsy Turvy... enough of this, allow me to pretend the film was glorious like how I saw it in my youth.

Appleseed: Ex Machina
2008-Animated/Sci-Fi
(Japan)
If there was anything that is still constant with Sci-Fi and its constant work to advance the genre it would be Japan. Masamune Shirow alone makes up the solid 50% of believable Sci-Fi in Japan alone (thats a jab at all the stupid Giant Robot movies/series with high school chicks) With works like "Black Magic M66, Dominion Tank Police, and Land Lock" Appleseed would have gone the way of obscurity if it wasnt for the re-imagination of it in 2004 experimenting with 3d animation to adapt the world of Olympus. Sad to say the first film back in 1988 wasn't that good but played the themes of what it is to be truly free if you are stuck in a bigger cage, the "Re-Imagined" on in 2004 introduced the themes of what it is to be truly human. Both film dived heavily in those fields but came short in the sense of directing and pacing of the film, equating to both films being Average at best.
Synopsis:
Deunan Knute, a young female warrior, and Briareos, a veteran cyborg-soldier, are both partners and lovers. As members of E.S.W.A.T., the elite special forces serving Olympus, they are deployed whenever trouble strikes. During a mission involving several high-ranking E.U. officials held hostage by a group of unknown and heavily-armed cyborgs, Briareos is injured protecting Deunan from an ensuing blast. As a last ditch effort by an injured cyborg, E.S.W.A.T. assigns Deunan a new partner, a bioroid named Tereus. Largely based on Briareos' DNA, Tereus was designed as a prototype for a new kind of fighter bioroid. His appearance is very similar to the way Briareos looked before he became a cyborg. Deunan is not agreeable to the idea of having a new partner, but eventually befriends him.
All-in-All:
To say this film was a massive improvement of the first one (well actually both the 1988 and 2004 versions) is like saying getting bit in the groin has slight displeasure's. I enjoyed the masterful art and CGI work of this film where the characters really moved smoother, you get a feeling of weight and impact on fight scenes. But the real star of the movie is the City of Olympus. It looks like a real futuristic city complete with crowds and traffic. The story is interesting enough asking the viewers on what it is to be truly human if you are mostly machine and the dangers of a unified world system. The only grip i have would be the long drawn out story. The movie could have ended 20min earlier if the action scenes didn't go way overboard, don't get me wrong, i love the graphics and movement but it takes away from as opposed to enriching the films story.

War
Its like a dream match come true. Jet Li vs. Jason Statham. Both action stars have great stage presence, and amazing Martial Arts skills in cinematic form. But what about the story?
Something terribly wrong with a movie hype about 2 actors as if they really did fight each other, resembles like the hype wagon of the WWE.
Well, past the hype and excitement what kind of movie do you have?
Synopsis:
2 Federal Agents chase after the Fabled 'Rouge', an unknown Assassin used by both the Chinese Triad and Japanese Yakuza. As the War between 2 gangs rise the John's (Statham) partner and family killed. John has now waged his own War on the assassin doing anything possible to avenge his best friend.
All-in-All:
Shotguns, Exotic cars, Kung Fu, and random 'stylized club sex' sums up the early pace of the film and ends with a 'Shocking' plot twist to leave the viewer thinking past the movie credits. Typical action cinema with actual research to there credit. I love the backdrop of San Francisco (not just because I live here) but because i think the city itself gives off a certain different energy and hectic fiction. It was entertaining and a joy to watch, the fight scenes were actually not too 'Kung Fu' and has some bit of relevance in actual street fights, and is quite enjoyable.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
The Fantasy genre has been going strong for the past few years, with a special thanks to the "Lord of the Rings" series. Since then every film in the same format copies the style of the predecessor (I'm looking at you 'Eragon'!).
A small handful of movies do reach the mark and the same Epic Scale of 'LotR' and "The Chronicles of Narnia" is a definite contender.
The first film was a great experience introducing the characters, their flaws, as well as the Landscape of Narnia, fully showing you the world that they entered through the wardrobe. If anything it was a nice tale for the whole family, but lacked any real teeth due to its childlike feel and light on violence story took away from the 'Final Battle' in the end of the film, leaving the viewers with a bloodless battle making the event with low stakes.
Synopsis:
The kids return to Narnia after 1 year (our time) but their return was a bit of a shock. Their kingdom that they left behind are in ruins, the ones they loved and befriended are long gone and it is 500 years since they last stepped foot in the magical land. The Lion King of Narnia 'Aslan' is but a myth and is not heard from in 500 years as well. An evil kingdom forcing the Narnians into hiding the kids with the help of Prince Caspian must stop the kingdom from destroying whats left of Narnia and bring peace between both lands.
All-in-All:
To be completely honest, I really didn't like the first movie. Yea, I know... 'How could you!' or 'Shut that mouth before I give you a sound thrashing' must be the knee jerk reaction from most of you but again, the first film didn't have any bit to it and the battles were neutered due to its 'Safe' childlike sequences.
This film is a far departure from the first one and dips into a darker side of Narnia were the world isn't a friendly place and hope is but a luxury. You fear for the lives of the characters and the people they are responsible for, and in the middle of it you finally find hope. This is a massive improvement on the first film, the lasting effect in its 'Universe' that changes the status quo saying goodbye to characters you've grown to love. It was a delightful surprise making a fan out of me and cant wait for the next instalment.

The Savages
If it wasn't for my friend I wouldn't have given this movie the light of day. I wasn't really interested of 'White America' and its way of treating the elderly, especially in my relationship with my grandparents and how the family takes care of there own and not just some 'American' mentality of putting them in a home of any sorts. So already I have my flaming arrows aimed at the film from the start, not expecting much with the whole sappy "I wish I was a better father/son/daughter" plot and makes the viewer value its loved ones.
Synopsis:
Carrying the emotional scars of an abusive childhood, siblings now have to face the challenges of caring for their dying elderly father, despite their emotional disconnect from each other.
All-in-All:
The plot was simple, the Narration was the gold mine of the film. The audience is sympathetic of the siblings and their 'burden' of dealing with a father that was never there. The narration wouldn't have been half as good if it wasn't for the brilliant acting done by Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman, portraying a realistic brother and sister relationship, and the minor character growth reminding the viewers that the event didn't change the siblings lives in a drastic way, but in the small minute things.
I thought this films acting and smart observation of the 'System' which most people go to of the elderly is interesting in the writing and execution weather I agree with the idea or not.

Ebola Sy ndrom
Chinese
First off; This film CANNOT be 1996, the style, clothing and even the Actor (Anthony Wong) is too young to be this recent. This is a time paradox that i care not research this anytime soon.
Second; I was in the whole 'Asian Shock Cinema' like a few months ago, so this whole movie arrived way too late and out from nowhere, if anything I've been into Barbaric films.
Third; I watched this film expecting far worse and am not 'New' to the 'Asian Shock' genre, so this isn't going to be a rant on how 'New' this is to me, I've seen images and theories far beyond most men.
Synopsis:
It all started one fortunate evening with the bosses Wife that led him to a triple Murder/Homicide. Wong flees Hong Kong and ends up as a waiter/cook in South Africa attempting to start anew, but carrying the same old vices. One day upon visiting an African Village he contracts Ebola and becomes a Typhoid Mary of some sort and is the key person on creating an Ebola outbreak in South Africa and Hong Kong.
All-in-All:
Again, Its nothing new to me seeing mutilation and rape, or even corps rap, but this film fits the bill. Its almost safe to say that the writers/directors designed this film to be Shock after Shock and fit a story in between. The characters were out of place (note the plot concerning the survived daughter and abruptly ends or the last min. addition of a 'Love' character for Wong), and no development other than proving that Wong is a Corps Rapist and Bloody Bastard. This was a headache to view and just when his antics of masturbating on a slab of meat he shaped to a vagina listening to his bosses sexual intimacy or cooking Ebola riddled victims as hamburger patties the story/plot in between these scenes were dull and just plain retarded. Keep away at all cost no matter how awesome the cover may seem.

Mezzo Forte
1998-Animated/Japan
This is the famed Yasuomi Umetsu's 2nd work. The first one is this movie 'Kite' which was very artistic and quite unprecedented for an unknown anime writer/director. His second attempt is in the same vein but in the realm of heavy comedy and dissfunction.
Synopsis:
Momokichi is a brutal baseball owner with mob connections. A mysterious old man hires Mikura and the Danger Service Agency (DSA) to kidnap Momokichi. but the DSA has bigger problems standing in their way, namely Momokichi's daughter Momomi, a young girl with a twisted mind and a loaded gun. Now the DSA must find a way to accomplish their mission without getting slaughtered in the process.
All-in-All:
Direction and Artistry is fine. The pacing is breakneck and the plot twists and turns are compelling but if anything this film was a far cry from reaching the mark. Namely the Characters are lost, and undeveloped. I've had problems remembering their names outside of just knowing their descriptions, and attitudes. There was no actual threat of loosing a favorite characters or ones life in jeopardy, which makes the general plot sink in the water. NOT SAFE FOR CHILDREN if you accidentally get the 'Uncut' version. To some way, the 'Uncut' scenes actually distract and confuse the viewers more for a senseless sex scene.

Red Sonia
1985-Fantasy
Arnold Schwarzenegger/Brigitte Nielsen
As a young child, watching this movie wowed and amazed me with its beauty, story, and battles. I loved the romance between the characters and always viewed this film like the unofficial 'Conan 3'. Time to see how this movie fared off with its age.
Synopsis:
Red Sonia is a girl left for dead by a wicked queen/warlord. Her capture, abuse, and ravishing turned her away from men. As she grew older, she studied the arts of killing and goes on a quest avenging her sisters (amazon priestess) and past, along her way she is meet with a mysterious and powerful stranger (Schwarzenegger) and a young prince & servant.
All-in-All:
I would like to say that this film is still better than Conan 2, and I'm glad that the whole sword and sorcery genre is experiencing a comeback and is currently going strong. A classic to the fans of the genre, Finally revealing a woman as a lead roll and not just eye candy or plot device.

Family Guy: Blue Harvest
Family Guy has a special place in my twisted mindheart. I loved the series before it got cancelled, I Loved the Stewie Griffin Movie, but since i no longer have reception for any shows I've been out of the loop. The few episodes i've seen in Family Guy have been hit or miss, and so when they did another movie with the Star Wars Seal of Approval by Lucas himself, this has to be good..... right?
Synopsis:
Star Wars: Episode 4 retold in Peters image!
All-in-All:
This film was pretty disappointing. Sure they added their quirkiness, and there brand of random humor, but this just felt like a long episode, a long average episode. Once the nostalgia of Star Wars wear off, your just stuck with pop songs and references.

The Golden Compass
The random hype this film got by religious folks reached even myself due to a random chain E-Mail of all things.
This film is as blasphemous as Ice Age/Land Before Time (evolution) or Harry Potter series (witchcraft) and Little Mermaid (worship of demigods). Get off it you fools! Sure the book dives into the whole anti organized religion and all 'Free Thinkers' (i.e. elitists that think they are better than everyone else not as smart as them) are glorified.
What we have here is a writer using a hot button issue and putting it on a book knowing people would be interested on his anti-Vatican/God views. No different than Bill Shakespeare or Hemingway.
Synopsis:
The the infinite Galaxy's there are infinite universes parallel to our own. Some have slight differences and others extreme (nothing new to comic book readers). In this universe souls are not inside the person but beside him, called Daemons. This universe is ruled by a tightfisted Religious organization named Magisterium, and instills a Monotheistic god and looks down upon science and forces control.
Lyra (little orphan girl) is set for a task to find/rescue her kidnapped friend and meet new comrades discovering the mysteries of the Golden Compass and a prophecy yet unrevealed.
All-in-All:
It is interesting that a book that received so much notice about anti religion, and that the Movie tried to keep the religious tones to a minimum. What you do get is an interesting coming of age movie with a grander/epic Sci-Fi/Fantasy tale. I enjoyed this film for its visuals (all polar bears must wear armor from this day forward!), average acting, and amazing war sequences keeping the violence true and harsh but maintaining the PG-13 rating without having tons of blood and decapitations. I liked the film, though it felt like it was all set up and not a complete film (duh! i know its a trilogy, but c'mon, that doesn't excuse a solid tale with tied up loose ends) but I do enjoy the perfect blend of children's story and Sci-Fi/Fantasy with balls!

2006-Horror/Thriller/Foreign
The saying goes that you shouldn't look at a book by its cover. The cover I saw at my local Walmart didn't do this film justice. It was more of a 'Saw' like cover(Below).
So by finding the 'International' version, (Left) This image would be better suited for the film.
Synopsis:
After being fired from his job as a salesman in Bangkok, Chit is in need of money to support his lifestyle and family. He receives a mysterious phone call asking Chit to do 13 tasks, each one more extreme than the other. How far does he go to live the life he thinks he deserves.
All-in-All:
Totaly unexpected plot, especialy coming from an unknown unproven country like Thailand. The story of a 'down on his luck' innocent guy given a horrible choice to make a change in his life is a story that i can never get enough of. Possibly its because of the theme hitting so close to home, forcing the viewere to think, how much money or what would i give up to get something i truly think i deserve. This film handles that topic properly and with justice, withough getting to the absurd and mearly getting on with the sensless killing/shock treatment. Sure there are lots of loose plot threads, and key directing/story telling mistakes but hay, this came from a country that is new to the Cinema Arts.

Yes, it took me a while to view this film. I had received this film from a friend for my birthday (August 22) and its been collecting dust since. I didn't have much expectations about this film, i though this would be another 'New Yorker in Los Angeles' movie.
Synopsis:
This is a story about Mike, a guy who left his girl in New York when he came to LA to be a star. It's been six months since his girlfriend left him and he's not doing so good. So, his pal and some other friends try and get him back in the social scene and forget about his 6 year relationship.
All-in-All:
This is a hard film to classify. A classic Comedy with witty banter with an actual plot. Reminds me of the Comedies of Dean Martins era, stylish, misogynistic, and simple. I especially enjoy the Las Vegas scene in which we get a 'REAL' Vegas and not the Vegas that Vegas Sells to us. A bunch of old people, and wannabes.

Viking Vs. Native American Warriors!
That enough for you? How about mix in Rambo 1st Blood? Now that should definitely guarantee an awesome and Manly Viewing... right?
Synopsis:
Story of a child abandoned by his Viking father in the new land (America) and raised by the Native Americans. An outcast by both his Nationality and Adopted Family he struggled in finding his purpose. Then one day the Vikings arrived to pillage and destroy the village. The 'Pathfinder' must now fend of his Past and protect the family that does not accept him.
All-in-All:
The question is posed, is this film Great? Vikings Vs. Native American Warriors, and mix "Rambo first Blood". The ingredients of a perfect Action Epic in the vein of "Gladiator" and "300". The visuals are beautiful, the costumes are amazing and terrifying, and the soundtrack perfectly used to amplify the effects. But what about the actual film? The film itself has minimal lines, you can view 20min. of footage without one solid word spoken. I have no problem with this, due to the average acting/performances, and the pacing of the film is horrible. In the end, the trailer gives you this idea of all action and brutality, but what you get is Zen like stillness and random shots of 'Stylish' brutality.

Jacky Wu
Ive been hearing a lot about this martial artist/actor. Every generation it is believed there is a 'Bruce Lee' of Asian cinema. After Bruce Lee, we had Jackie Chan, then Jet Li, and now, possibly Jacky Wu.
I've always considered him as China's response to Thailand's 'Tony Jaa' and to show that Chinese Nationalism.
Synopsis:
Jacky plays as a mainland china simpleton trying to get by making a living as an acrobatic performer using his martial arts. Being showed the need to make a better living with his companions, he is then exposed to the secret underground 'Fight Club' were people bet on fights and fighters receive a considerable purse. Jacky's friendships, romantic interests and personal beliefs is put to the test as he tries to make sense of all this that is around him.
All-in-All:
This film lives up to the hype of a great new Martial Artist and its brutal fight scenes, and showcasing this new contender in the Kung Fu genre. The story though takes a back seat as the characters are not relatable, and to some point frustrating. Can it be cultural differences? What ever the case may be the ending was logical, predictable, and to the point. It feels like the film didn't have an ending, and that when the time came, they just picked the simplest one, then instead of sticking with the statement, backs down and makes it 'Happy'.

Shadow: Dead Riot
This film was made known to my group by a horrible trailer played before a horrible movie... possibly 3 months ago. We decided to hold of on the film due to our themed months. Now that Prison month is here, this is what we really dedicated this month for. So you can see the Hype we had going into this film, and the expectations of our "Man Movie" nights hold to standard.
Synopsis:
Shadow (Tony Todd) is a powerful/mystical mass murderer put to death. His body buried underneath the prison with his minions of mind controlled zombies. 20 years later this prison has re-opened as a Women's Correctional Facilities. Solitaire, a woman with a mysterious past, transferred to this prison fending off tough inmates (Tatianna Butler), and seeing visions of Shadow and his upcoming Resurrection.
All-in-All:
This film is a homage of "Riki-Oh: The story of Ricky". The writers and director wanted to originally update the story with a twist. In the end, this came out, and i must say... It was worth the rental. Fight choreography was exceptional (the choreography, not the actors) the all out ridiculousness, and the random shots of "Female Prison" experiences. Funny movie to watch and its always nice to see Candyman (Tony Todd) back to work.

The Great Raid
Its funny that the tag line is "A story that has Never Been Told" cuz this film was originally made in 2003, and due to the Disney-Miramax split this film was going to be lost in archive. 2 points in my book; #1 move was almost never released, #2 its about the Philippines war effort and as a Filipino i believe we should know more about what our grandparents/relatives went through during this time.
Synopsis:
Taking place towards the end of WWII, 500 American Soldiers have been entrapped in a camp for 3 years. Beginning to give up hope they will ever be rescued, a group of Rangers goes on a dangerous mission to try and save them.
All-in-All:
Is there such a thing as a High Budget B-Movie? Actually i know there is, its just that this movie amazes me for the whole B-Movie War Epic. Now as a viewer, ignore the historical inaccuracies like Margaret Utinsky was actually long gone by the time of this event occurs, she did not have a 'lover' caught in the POW camps and the list goes on and on. What this film is, is that it tells the story of what happened in Philippines during this time, war atrocities, and what the civilians/resistance do to help the successful 'Island Jumping Campaign. Acting was shallow, directing was below the standard and made horrible use of lighting (too dark) and pacing.

Letters from Iwo Jima
Ken Watanabe
In every war film there is always some sort of bias, and an unfair narration of what side is 'Good' and 'Evil'. This film was filmed back to back with "Flags of our Fathers" both films directed by Clint Eastwood. This was an amazing idea, "Flags" for the American side, and "Iwo Jima" the Japanese side. The problem was that most American Viewers only sat through 1 ( i mean, c'mon! over $20 per person for the same movie/event?). In the end, "Iwo Jima" suffered he box office sales.
Synopsis:
The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.
All-in-All:
I have to say that this film is the closest to properly show both sides of the war, both noble and twisted in all its glory. In the end of any war, what is the difference? Both sides sends letters to loved ones, sharing hopes, fears, encouragement, both human, differences lie in loyalties, and blind faith on the sides in belief of their sides being 'Good'. This film wow's me and brings relevance in a genre filled with non-stop action and propaganda.
